Eric Vale: Epic Fail

From the man behind Don’t Call Me Ishmael and its follow ups, and Just a Dog, Eric Vale will become popular with fans of Jeff Kinney’s Wimpy Kid and L. Pinchon’s Tom Gates books. Michael Gerard Bauer uses attention grabbing typography and a simple style of illustrations by his son, Joe Bauer, to tap into that market of (mostly) boys aged 8 and up. Some of them might be reluctant readers, some of them not, but all of them will giggle along with Bauer in this one for the not-so-cool kids.
A story of bad luck, friendship and the power of stupid nicknames, Bauer has hit a younger market than his Ishmael series still with relevant morals, and kept it laugh-out-loud funny and easy to read.

Joe Bauer is also filmmaker; see the book trailer he made below!

Clementine Rose and the Surprise Visitor by Jacqueline Harvey

Jacqueline Harvey is the author of the Alice-Miranda series of books, which are great favourites here at Fairfield Books. She has now released the first book in a new series for younger readers, centred on a sweet little girl called Clementine Rose and her pet teacup pig, Lavender. Clementine Rose was delivered to her mother, Lady Clarissa, with a batch of dinner rolls when she was a baby, and has lived with her in leaky, dilapidated Penberthy House ever since. In Clementine Rose and the Surprise Visitor, Clementine must solve the mystery of why creepy Aunt Violet has come to stay with a curious black bag. There will be more adventures to come in this charming new series, perfect for readers 6-10. $12.95

Arkie Sparkle by Petra James

Arkie Sparkle is an eleven-year-old treasure hunter, and is the star of a great new adventure series by Petra James. Arkie’s parents are archaeologists, and have been kidnapped! A note has been left in the cookie jar saying she needs to travel the world to seven continents to find seven treasures in seven days to secure her parents release. Luckily Arkie is brave and resourceful and a dab hand at solving puzzles and cracking codes, so with her fellow adventurers TJ (her genius cousin) and Cleo the basset hound, she sets off. Each of the seven books in the series finds the gang in a different country solving the clues in order to find each treasure. We have the first two books in the series: Arkie Sparkle: Code Crimson, which is set in Egypt, and Arkie Sparkle: Time Trap, which takes place in China. For a limited time the first book in the series is only $6.99, so well worth a try! The second book is $13. A fantastic series for adventurous types aged 7-11.

Sam Silver: Undercover Pirate

There used to be a bit of a gap in the market of great stories for younger boys. This has been admirably addressed in recent times, and now there are some fabulous books around. A wonderful addition is a new series by Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler about young Sam Silver, a regular soccer-loving fellow who lives with his parents in a small seaside town. One day, while he’s playing on the beach he discovers an old bottle which he thinks would be perfect for his collection of interesting things. On further investigation, he finds it contains a letter written by none other than Joseph Silver, captain of the Sea Wolf, and a distant relation of Sam’s! It also holds a gold doubloon which turns out to be magic, and transports Sam back in time to the 1700s. What follows is much swash-buckling, treasure-hunting and rollicking adventures before Sam returns to the present in time for his shift at his parent’s fish & chip shop. The first two in the series have been released: Skeleton Island and The Ghost Ship. Great fun for 7-10 year old adventure lovers! Paperback $13
